A Celebration of Michael's Life

Meeking, Michael Douglas

June 16, 1961 - June 16, 2008

On his 47th birthday, Michael "Meeks the Clown" went to be with our Lord Jesus.
He passed peacefully with his wife, Jody, and children Kyle, Alex, Brady and Kayla at his side.

We will always remember Mike's fun-loving smile and huge heart towards everyone he knew. We appreciate his courage and strength, which has given us the ability to continue to smile and laugh as we carry on.

A celebration in Michael's honour will be held on June 28th at Jericho Hill Centre Gymnasium (4196 W. 4th Ave.) Service will begin at 1:00pm with a casual family picnic to follow. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and lunches!

Hi Jody,

Not sure if you'll remember me from Fraserview. My sister Jennifer just passed on this blog site. I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

I am currently pastoring a church in Mississauga ON, which we planted 8 years ago.

Unfortunately, we have obviously lost touch... it's probably been almost 20 years. But I wanted you to know that I have mentioned Mike to many people throughout my life and ministry. Any time in a small group or in a conversation someone would ask, "who was a mentor to you when you were a teen?" Or, "what adult had a significant impact on you when you were young?" My answer was always, "Mike Meeking the clown."

Mike "took me in" when I was a wandering 17 year old trying to make sense of faith and church. A little disillusioned and quite bored, Mike showed me another way.

He invested in me... he saw the "clown" in me. The person who usually got in trouble for goofing off, was now being embraced and valued! WOW... that meant so much to me.

And he taught me juggling and mime. But mostly he showed me love. And one of the reasons why I'm following Christ and pursuing ministry that is creative and adventurous and out of the box, is because of Mike's investment in me.

Sometimes when I want to add some fun or some zaniness to a sermon I'll pull out a mime skill or a juggling skill that I learned from Mike.

Mike mostly showed me that faith can be enjoyable, ministry can be creative, and love is being a friend and mentor who listens and cares and meets people where they're at.

This must be a difficult time for you and your beautiful family. I pray for God's blessing of grace and peace to you and the kids. If there is anything I can do in the future please let me know.

Sincerley,

Jon Osmond

I know this comment is 10 years late and that you might not see it. But I wanted to let you know that I always looked forward to Meeks the Clown and Meeks Family Circus in the Filberg Festival in Courtenay. It was my favourite part as a child and I was wondering for so long what happened to Meeks when he stopped performing. Now I know.

It sounded like he was well loved and had supportive family and friends throughout his journey. I am glad I got to read his story and I am thankful for you for posting it online.
